Budgeting, of course, should be part of pre-Camino planning. I developed a simple spreadsheet tool to help with this process. A link to the spreadsheet (in Excel format) is provided below for others to download, use, and modify. The budget planner includes provisions for the following:

Inputs

  • Pre/Post-Camino costs (e.g., airfare, ground transport, lodging, gear and food)
  • During Camino (e.g., albergues, food, and incidentals)
  • Contingency budgets (20%) for other costs
  • Pre/Post-Camino travel days
  • Days walking the Camino (from St. John Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela and then on to Finisterre in this case)
  • Allowance for resting and touring days
  • Planned departure date

Outputs

  • Estimated Pre-Post-Camino cost
  • Estimated during Camino cost
  • Estimated total trip cost
  • Estimated costs per day overall and during Camino
  • Calculated return date

The estimated quantities, estimated costs, and estimated travel/walking days in the current version are placeholders. As my planning progresses, I’ll refine these estimates off-line.
